Junior Adam Stawski (Plum) shot 78 and senior Matt Schrader (West Shamokin) carded a season-best 83 Oct 7 to help Penn State New Kensington move into third place after the first round of the Penn State University Athletic Conference championships at the Penn State Blue Course in State College, Pa. Stawski, the 2009 PSUAC runner-up, is a stroke behind the leader, Chase King of Penn State Mont Alto, the team leader at 313. The final round of the 36-hole tournament is set for 9 a.m., Tuesday, Oct. 8. Sophomore Ben Hammel (Riverview) shot 85 as the New Kensington Lions closed to within nine strokes of second-place Penn College, 339.
The United States Collegiate Athletic Association is holding its nation championships in conjunction with the PSUAC tournament. Individually, Stawski is ninth nationally, four stokes behind the leader of the 140-man field. The top ten earn USCAA All America status. As at team, New Kensington is 10th in the 23-team field.
