Garcia Powers Late Surge as Penn State New Kensington Tops Shenango, 7–5
New Kensington, Pa. – Powered by a pair of home runs and a four-hit performance from Miguel Garcia, Penn State New Kensington staged a comeback victory over Penn State Shenango, 7–5, in a back-and-forth contest on Wednesday afternoon.
New Kensington's offense came alive early, scoring three runs in the second inning. John Galeano Del Castillo tied the game with an RBI single before Garcia delivered a sacrifice fly, and Bryan Calderon added an RBI fielder's choice to push the Lions ahead 3–1.
Shenango responded with four unanswered runs across the third through fifth innings, taking a 5–4 lead behind clutch at-bats from Jason Malley, Tyler Evans, and Nate Evans. However, the Lions refused to go quietly.
In the bottom of the sixth, Chris Magnee launched a solo homer to tie the game, and moments later, Garcia crushed a two-run shot — his fourth RBI of the game — to give New Kensington a 7–5 lead they wouldn't relinquish.
On the mound, starter AJ Demharter battled through five innings, allowing five runs on six hits and five walks. Reliever Nathan Mecke was lights out in the final two innings, retiring all six batters he faced and earning his first win of the season.
Garcia finished the game 3-for-3 with a double, home run, four RBIs, and a sac fly. Calderon added two hits and an RBI, while Caden Rupert scored three times and swiped a base. The Lions' defense also turned a key double play and committed just one error in the win.
