Late Homer Lifts Scranton Past New Kensington in Back-and-Forth Softball Battle
April 13, 2025 – Dunmore, PA — It was a game of momentum swings and clutch hits, but a late home run proved to be the difference as Penn State New Kensington fell to Penn State Scranton 5-4 on Saturday afternoon in a hard-fought PSUAC matchup.
New Kensington took an early lead in the top of the second, thanks to a 2-RBI double by Jaiden Patterson, who later came around to score on a defensive miscue, giving the Lions a 2-0 advantage.
Scranton responded with a three-run rally in the third, highlighted by a 2-RBI double from Genevieve Moyles and a run-scoring triple from Kelsi Howe to take a 3-2 lead. But New Kensington wasn't done—Shai Moore tied things up in the fourth with an RBI single, and Kali Barnett added a sacrifice fly to give the Lions a 4-3 edge.
Pitching settled in for both teams until the bottom of the seventh, when Scranton's Madison Kelsch delivered the game-winning blow: a 2-run home run to left, her second extra-base hit of the day, giving Scranton the walk-off win.
Brookelyn Kotch, who came on in relief, was charged with the loss despite a solid outing, allowing just one earned run over four innings.
