PSNK Wrestler Finishes in Round of 24 at NCWA National Championships
Two Penn State New Kensington wrestlers returned from NCWA National Championships in Allen, Texas this past weekend. Freshman heavyweight, John Doppelhauer, finished in the round of 24 with a record of 1-2. Doppelhauer won his first match of the tournament by defeating John Carlyle from Lindenwood University-St. Charles (St. Charles, MO) by a score of 2-1. Doppelhauer earned a stalling point early in the third period and also earned an escape point to eventually win the match. After wining his first match, Doppelhauer lost his next two matches of the tournament. In the first match against Ethan Stanley form Navy Prep (Newport, Rhode Island), Doppelhauer lost by a score of 3-0. His next match was against Darius Lewis from Lindenwood University-Belleville (Belleville, IL). Doppelhauer dropped the match 7-3.
Also competing for the PSNK Nittany Lions was sophomore James Melnyk. He wrestled up a weight class from his normal 157 to wrestle at 165. Melnyk dropped his first match of the tournament against Frankie McKeown from Alabama University. Melnyk won his next match against Will Royster from the University of Michigan. He dropped his final match of the tournament against Stephen Kemp of Lindenwood University-St. Charles. Melnyk finished the tournament with a record of 1-2.
